| Fellowship in Vascular Thoracic Anesthesia
Clinical work will be on an active Vascular Surgery service, with 5 attending surgeons, including the Chairman of the Surgery Department, Dr. Jeffrey Matthews. The Thoracic Surgery Service is under the direction of Dr. Mark Ferguson. Regional and combined regional/general anesthetics are used frequently on both services. Clinical research in the section has focused on the use of sympatholytic alpha2 agonists in patients undergoing vascular surgery. Studies of clonidine have been funded by the National National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Dexmedetomidine, a newer alpha2 agonist, is being studied in Phase III trials in conjunction with Abbott Laboratories. Other research activities have focused on the use of decion and cost-effectiveness analysis to identify useful perioperative practices in patients undergoing Vascular and Thoracic surgery. These efforts have involved our own local expertise, as well as that of colleagues at Johns Hopkins and in India. The teaching in the section is exemplary. Team members, Dr. Allan Klock and Dr. Jerry Klafta, have combined to win two recent "Teacher of the Year" Awards. Members of the section combine with members of the Cardiac Anesthesia section to present advanced seminars on Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesia and Echocardiography. The University of Chicago is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
