Congratulations to Dr. Chun Su Yuan who has received official notification from the NIH and NCCAM that his project grant submission for the creation of a ³Center for Herbal Research on Colorectal Cancer² has been awarded a grant in the amount of $6 million over the next 5 years. The focus of this project grant will be to characterize the anti-cancer activities and mechanisms of action of two distinctly different ginseng herbs.

Congratulations to the Roth Lab whose abstract submitted for the ASA 08 Annual Meeting, entitled "Mechanisms of Induction of Ischemic Tolerance with erythropoietin" has been selected among 10 out of 2100 submitted abstracts for presentation at the Best Abstracts of the Meeting: Anesthesiology Editors Picks Special Session at the Orange County Convention Center from 8:00 - 10:00 am Monday, October 20 in Room W230A. The authors are Dr. Roth, with DACC Research Associate John Dreixler, Ph.D., senior research technician Afzhal Shaikh, and Dr. Daniel Rosenbaum, Chairman, Department of Neurology, Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY. The research was supported by National Institutes of Health grants EY10343 to Dr. Roth, EY 11253 to Dr. Rosenbaum, and a grant in aid to Dr. Roth from the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. |

It is presented to an individual for outstanding achievement in ambulatory anesthesia and is the highest honor which the Society can bestow. Congratulations to: Neil Ray, a Pritzker MS2 who spent last summer doing research in the department, received best in section (economics) recognition for his abstract at the International Anesthesia Research Society Meeting in San Francisco. His abstract was entitled “Does Past Performance Guarantee Future Results? ER Visits, Outpatient Appointments, and Day of Surgery Cancellations”. Neil was mentored during his summer research by Dr's. Avery Tung and David Glick.

DACC is the recipient of a grant from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research. Dr. Roth is the program director at DACC. University of Chicago medical student Yang Shen will perform research, supported by Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowships. This is a competitive program which is designed to expose outstanding medical students to anesthesia research and to encourage such students to consider careers in academic anesthesia. The students apply and if accepted, they are placed according to their interests. |

It is given “in recognition of outstanding continued dedication in sponsoring, promoting, and/or furthering education for anesthesia technicians and technologists.” We were nominated for the spring meeting that was held here back in April. The technicians who attended the San Francisco meeting (Zane, Dave, Sam, and Donna) accepted the award on behalf of the DACC. |
